The AHS Jazz Band is an upper-level, competitive ensemble for juniors and seniors with few exceptions made for upper-level sophomores and Freshmen where needed. Students are selected with the help of their Jazz Band Audition, evaluations, knowledge of their music reading skill levels, and participation in their band classes. Other than an audition, the only other way to be accepted into the AHS Jazz Band is a direct invitation from Ms. Haley Cook, Director of Jazz.
All students in the jazz band must be enrolled in a classical band or percussion class. Students in the jazz class will learn advanced repertoire, improvisation, and jazz pedagogy, culture, and history. Students must meet the advanced expectations in order to remain in Jazz Band. There will be class, group, and/or individual evaluations to determine eligibility to remain in Jazz Band. AHS Jazz Band Instrumentation: 2 Alto Saxophones, 2 Tenor Saxophones, 1 Baritone Saxophone (Saxophones may be expected to double on Flute, Clarinet, or Bass Clarinet) 4-5 Trumpets (Trumpets may be expected to double on Flugelhorn) 4-5 Trombones 1 Piano, 1 Guitar, 1 Bass (Double and/or Electric), 1 Drum Kit, 1 Auxiliary Percussion *Students accepted into the AHS Jazz Band Program are required to attend the Diaz Jazz Institute Summer Camp, Hosted by Grammy Artist Jose Diaz. Students wishing to audition for the AHS Jazz Band will need to fill and sign the agreement and have it ready with them on the day of the audition. |
